Recognised certifications

Earn certificates employers know

Industry certifications prove a specific skill — and most don't ask for your school results. You pass the exam, you hold the certificate.

Know your options

Learnership, internship, certification — what's the difference?

They all build skills, but they suit different people at different points. Here's the plain-language version.

Learnership

A structured programme that mixes classroom learning with real work at a company. Most pay a monthly stipend and end in a qualification registered on the NQF.

Matric
Depends on the level — many entry-level ones don't need it.
Cost
Free to you. Employers and SETAs pay.
Length
Usually about 12 months.

Apprenticeship

Training on the job for a trade — electrician, plumber, welder, mechanic — that ends in a trade test and makes you a qualified artisan.

Matric
Varies by trade; maths often matters.
Cost
Usually free, often with a stipend.
Length
One to four years.

Internship

Real work experience for a set time — usually for people who've finished a qualification and need that first job on their CV.

Matric
Usually yes, plus a qualification.
Cost
Free. Many pay a stipend.
Length
6 to 24 months.

Certification

A credential from a technology or industry body that proves one specific skill. Employers recognise it, and it travels with you.

Matric
Most don't ask — you pass an exam.
Cost
Exams cost money unless sponsored.
Length
Weeks to a few months.

Short course & skills programme

Focused training on one thing — Excel, customer service, first aid, coding basics. Quick to finish and a solid line on your CV.

Matric
Rarely needed.
Cost
Free to a few thousand rand.
Length
A day to a few months.

Finishing matric

Rewrite subjects, improve your marks, or complete matric as an adult. It's never too late, and it opens the next set of doors.

Matric
This is how you get it.
Cost
Public support exists; tutoring varies.
Length
One exam cycle or more.

No matric? Read this

You still have real options.

Not having matric closes some doors — not all of them. Plenty of learnerships, skills programmes and industry certifications look at what you can do, not what's on paper.

  1. Start with what's open to youFilter for “No matric needed”. We only include listings that say so clearly, so you don't waste an application.
  2. Earn while you learnEntry-level learnerships often accept Grade 9 to 11, and many pay a monthly stipend while you train.
  3. Get certifiedMany industry certifications only ask you to pass the exam — no school results needed.
  4. Finish matric when you're readyYou can rewrite subjects or complete an adult matric at any age. It opens the next set of doors.

How to spot a fake learnership

Fake learnership adverts are common. They're after your money, your ID number, or both. Real opportunities never work like this.

Listings marked Verified have been checked by the SPAAN NOW team. Every Apply button takes you to the provider's own site, and we never charge you to apply. Seen something off? Tell us.
  • You're asked to pay a fee to apply, register, or “secure your spot”.
  • Recruiting happens only on WhatsApp, with no company address or website.
  • They “guarantee” you a place or a job before any interview.
  • They ask for your banking PIN, passwords, or a deposit.
  • A free email address (like @gmail.com) claims to be a company or government department.
Questions

Good to know

Does SPAAN NOW run these courses?

No. We bring opportunities from trusted providers — training colleges, companies, SETAs and partners like Netcampus — together in one place. When you apply, you apply directly with them.

Is it free to use?

Yes. Browsing, saving and tracking are free. Some courses have fees — the cost is on every listing — and many are free or fully funded.

What does “No matric needed” mean?

The provider has said clearly that you can apply without a matric certificate. If a listing doesn't mention matric, we show “Check requirements” instead — we'd rather not guess.

What is a stipend?

A monthly allowance some learnerships and internships pay while you train, to help with transport and living costs. It isn't a salary, and the amount varies.

What does “Verified” mean?

Our team checked that the listing is real and its details are current. Unverified listings come from partners too — they just haven't had that extra check yet.

How do I keep track of what I applied for?

Save anything you're interested in. After you click Apply, we'll ask whether you applied — say yes and it moves to “In progress” in My Learning, where you can update it as you hear back.

I finished a course. Now what?

Mark it as completed in My Learning and add it to your CV. Then look for jobs on SPAAN NOW that ask for that skill.

Your next step can start today.

Save what interests you, apply on the provider's site, and keep track of it all in one place.
