About this opportunity
The Second Chance Matric Support Programme provides free tutoring to eligible candidates in the Western Cape who want to improve their matric results or work towards completing their National Senior Certificate (NSC) or amended Senior Certificate (SC).
The programme is offered by the Department of Basic Education, with support centres established by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). Experienced teachers provide face-to-face tutoring at selected venues to help candidates strengthen their subject knowledge and prepare for examinations.
Who Can Apply?
The programme supports eligible candidates in the following categories:
- NSC candidates: Candidates who previously wrote the National Senior Certificate examinations between 2008 and 2026 and want to rewrite subjects to improve their results.
- Candidates taking new NSC subjects: Eligible candidates preparing to write new subjects in the October/November examination session, including those required to complete School-Based Assessments (SBAs).
- Senior Certificate candidates: Adult candidates aged 18 and older who have at least a Grade 9 qualification or Adult Education and Training (AET) Level 4 qualification and need to complete or improve their Senior Certificate.
Subjects Available
Tutoring is offered in Accounting, Agricultural Sciences, Business Studies, Economics, English First Additional Language, Geography, History, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy and Physical Sciences.
Learning support includes study guides, past examination papers and Mind the Gap materials for selected subjects.
How Does It Work?
Classes are generally scheduled from February to May for candidates writing the May/June examinations, and from August to October for candidates preparing for the October/November examinations. Contact the WCED to confirm current classes, venues and availability.
Important: Joining the tutoring programme does not automatically register you for your examinations. You must register separately through the appropriate examination registration process and meet the relevant requirements.
Take advantage of this free support opportunity to strengthen your knowledge, improve your results and work towards achieving your matric qualification.
What you walk away with
A formally accredited qualification on the NQF — the kind of certificate that opens the next level of study or work.
Before you apply
