Overview

A logistics company in Dar es Salaam is looking for a hands-on Workshop Manager to keep their fleet of trucks and commercial vehicles running safely and cost effectively. You will lead a team of mechanics and technicians, manage maintenance schedules, control spare parts and make sure everything stays compliant. This is a fixed term role offering accommodation, flights and a work permit, ideal for a qualified artisan or engineer ready to take charge of a busy workshop.

About the role

Our client in the logistics industry is hiring a Workshop Manager to take full responsibility for planning, directing and controlling all workshop operations. The goal is simple: keep the fleet safe, reliable, compliant and available when it is needed.

You will plan and monitor preventive and corrective maintenance, oversee timely diagnosis and repair of mechanical, electrical and bodywork faults, and work to minimise vehicle downtime without compromising quality or safety. Compliance is a big part of the role, so you will keep maintenance records, service logs and inspection reports up to date in line with Tanzanian traffic laws and OSHA requirements.

On the people side, you will supervise mechanics, technicians, electricians and support staff. That means allocating tasks, monitoring productivity, mentoring staff, identifying training needs and enforcing discipline and safety procedures. You will also manage spare parts, tools and consumables, control repair costs, raise purchase requisitions and coordinate with suppliers and SLA partners across the DRC, Zambia and Tanzania.

You will report on fleet condition, maintenance costs, breakdown trends and workshop KPIs, and work closely with Fleet Operations, Procurement, Finance, HR and the Health and Safety Manager. The role is based at the company workshop and may require extended hours or on-call availability when breakdowns happen.

Requirements

  • Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or a related technical discipline
  • A recognised technical certification in automotive or heavy equipment maintenance is an added advantage
  • Minimum of 5 to 8 years' relevant experience in workshop or fleet maintenance management
  • Proven experience managing commercial vehicles, heavy duty trucks or mixed fleets, especially Chinese and Scania trucks
  • An established network of garages and spare part vendors, preferably within the DRC, Zambia and Tanzania
  • Strong technical knowledge of vehicle systems and maintenance practices
  • Leadership, supervisory and people management skills
  • Cost control, budgeting and planning capability
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals, diagnostics and maintenance data
  • Strong communication and reporting skills in English; Swahili proficiency is an advantage
  • High level of integrity, accountability and problem solving ability
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle part and spares quality

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement and monitor preventive and corrective maintenance programmes for all fleet vehicles
  • Ensure timely diagnosis and repair of mechanical, electrical and bodywork faults while minimising vehicle downtime
  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with Tanzanian road traffic laws, OSHA requirements and internal company policies
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs, inspection reports and statutory documentation
  • Supervise mechanics, technicians, electricians and workshop support staff
  • Allocate tasks, monitor productivity and enforce quality workmanship standards
  • Identify training needs, mentor staff and support technical skills development
  • Manage spare parts, tools, lubricants and consumables inventory
  • Control maintenance and repair costs through planning, supplier coordination and waste reduction
  • Raise purchase requisitions and ensure procurement of approved and genuine parts
  • Support health and safety compliance, including safety briefings, inspections and risk assessments
  • Prepare and submit daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly reports on fleet condition, costs, breakdown trends and KPIs
  • Coordinate with Fleet Operations, Procurement, Finance, HR, HSE and SLA garages and spare part vendors
  • Provide technical input on fleet replacement planning, lifecycle costing and maintenance strategies

Success Guide

This is a great opportunity if you have solid workshop management experience and you are open to working outside South Africa. The employer is specifically looking for someone who knows heavy duty trucks, especially Scania and Chinese brands, so make sure your CV clearly shows the fleet types you have worked with and the size of the teams you have led.

Highlight your experience with preventive maintenance planning, cost control and spare parts management, as these are central to the role. If you have existing contacts with garages or parts suppliers in the DRC, Zambia or Tanzania, mention that too because it is a strong advantage.

Because the role is a fixed term contract in Tanzania, be ready to discuss your willingness to relocate and your ability to work with cross border suppliers. Keep your application focused on practical workshop results rather than general statements.
