Software Engineer (React & TypeScript) - Mossel Bay

Agritalent · Mossel Bay, Western Cape

Contract
Best to apply before 23 Nov 2026 (15 days left)
Source verified Checked yesterday

Overview

Agritalent is looking for a hands-on Software Engineer to take full ownership of MapTerra, a digital platform for regenerative grazing and carbon reporting. This is a 12 month contract based on site in Mossel Bay, perfect for a developer who loves building data-heavy interfaces, working with React and TypeScript, and seeing their code make a real difference in the field. You will work in a lean team, solve real problems for farmers and auditors, and occasionally visit project sites in the Karoo.

About the role

As the Software Engineer for MapTerra, you will be the driving force behind the web app and its offline-first mobile counterpart. MapTerra is a digital Measurement, Reporting and Verification platform that helps track land, livestock and ecological events for carbon and ecosystem-service frameworks. You will bridge the gap between the API and the daily workflows of field staff, farmers, auditors and funders.

This role is not just about writing code. You will act as product manager, designer and QA engineer for the front end, taking loosely defined problems, discovering user needs and shipping reliable solutions. You will work closely with a Full Stack Software Engineer and support weekly releases, which includes occasional visits to project sites in the Karoo.

This is a fully on-site role in Mossel Bay, Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00. There is no hybrid working option.

Requirements

  • Proven track record of shipping at least one production React and TypeScript application that real users rely on
  • Expertise in building data-heavy interfaces, including long forms, complex tables, filters and status workflows
  • Sound architecture for state and API integration, handling loading states, errors, retries and slow networks
  • A test-driven mindset where testing is part of the building process, not an afterthought
  • Clear, structured written communication skills for design notes, decision records and pull requests
  • A relevant qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent demonstrated experience
  • A valid driver's licence for field visits

Responsibilities

  • Develop interactive dashboards, data imports, BI exports and comprehensive mapping interfaces for the web app
  • Build screens for the field staff mobile app using React Native (Expo) and keep them in sync with the web platform via a shared component library
  • Design robust forms that handle strict audit rules, ensuring drafts save freely, submissions are final and a three-timestamp rule is enforced on every record, even offline
  • Write unit and component tests alongside feature development and maintain the Playwright end-to-end suite
  • Treat CI as an absolute gate before opening any pull requests
  • Ensure the application remains highly usable on low-end Android devices in areas with slow or zero connectivity
  • Maintain zero console errors against a real backend
  • Work closely with the Full Stack Software Engineer to establish API contracts, read FastAPI routes and occasionally run the backend locally
  • Triage defects reported from the field and support weekly releases, including occasional visits to project sites in the Karoo

Success Guide

This role is perfect for a mid-level developer who wants to see the impact of their work in the real world. When applying, make sure your CV or portfolio clearly shows at least one production React and TypeScript project you have shipped. They care more about what you have built than how many years you have worked. Highlight any experience with data-heavy interfaces, offline functionality or mobile development. A driver's licence is important because you will occasionally visit sites in the Karoo. During the interview, be ready to talk through your code, how you approach testing and how you solve problems when requirements are not fully defined. Show that you can communicate clearly and work independently in a small team.
