Overview

iOCO is looking for a hands-on Senior DevOps Engineer to work inside an AWS native banking environment in Sandton. You will own the build, automation and operational tooling that delivery teams rely on every day. This is an engineering role first, so you will spend most of your time in code and configuration, writing pipelines, automating AWS provisioning and removing manual toil from the path to production. Hybrid role, 3 days in office.

About the role

iOCO is hiring a Senior DevOps Engineer to operate inside an AWS native banking environment in Sandton. This is a hands-on engineering role where you will own the build, automation and operational tooling that delivery teams depend on daily.

You will work alongside developers, architects, security engineers and platform teams to keep delivery flowing reliably inside a regulated, PCI-DSS environment. The role blends core DevOps engineering with platform engineering and, where you bring SRE skills, deeper reliability work.

What you will do:

  • Design, build and maintain CI/CD pipelines that move code from commit to production safely and repeatably.
  • Automate AWS workload provisioning and configuration deployment using infrastructure as code.
  • Build deployment automation, release tooling and environment management for delivery squads.
  • Harden the developer experience with repository templates, pipeline templates and self-service tooling.
  • Integrate security and compliance controls into pipelines and infrastructure.
  • Work hands-on across an AWS estate, integrating cloud-native services with on-premises systems.
  • Apply SRE principles where applicable to improve observability, incident response and resilience.

Please note: This is a hybrid role based in Sandton, with 3 days per week in the office at a client site.

Requirements

  • 7+ years hands-on experience in a DevOps or SRE role, with a clear weighting toward DevOps engineering, automation and CI/CD delivery.
  • Hands-on experience in an AWS environment, preferably in financial services with PCI-DSS compliant systems.
  • Demonstrable track record implementing CI/CD pipeline automation across functional areas of a delivery organisation.
  • Strong AWS workload automation experience covering infrastructure provisioning and software configuration rollout.
  • Practical experience implementing observability for hybrid and cloud-based environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of networking principles and protocols.
  • Working understanding of the AWS Well-Architected Framework and how to apply it in practice.
  • Essential AWS services: EC2, RDS, EBS, EKS, ECS, Load Balancing, Secrets Manager, KMS, Service Catalog.
  • Essential tooling: AWS CDK, AWS CloudWatch, Splunk or AppDynamics, ELK, CI/CD platforms (Harness, Azure DevOps, GitLab or equivalent), Linux and Windows Server.
  • Preferred: Python scripting, AWS CloudFormation, Bash scripting.
  • Advantageous: Site Reliability Engineering principles and practices in production environments, troubleshooting low-latency Java-based applications, experience in an audit-heavy regulated environment.
  • Beneficial certifications: AWS Certified SysOps Administrator, AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build and maintain CI/CD pipelines that move code from commit to production safely and repeatably across the delivery estate.
  • Automate AWS workload provisioning and configuration deployment using infrastructure as code, ensuring environments are reproducible, version-controlled and auditable.
  • Build and operate deployment automation, release tooling and environment management that delivery squads depend on day to day.
  • Harden the developer experience through repository templates, pipeline templates, deployment patterns and self-service tooling.
  • Integrate security and compliance controls into pipelines and infrastructure, including secrets management, access control and change traceability.
  • Translate business and technical requirements into scalable, automated delivery solutions aligned to the AWS Well-Architected Framework.
  • Work hands-on across an AWS estate, integrating cloud-native services with on-premises systems where required.
  • Build and operate workloads across EC2, RDS, EBS, EKS, ECS, Load Balancing, Secrets Manager, KMS and Service Catalog.
  • Use AWS CDK as the primary infrastructure-as-code tool, with CloudFormation, Ansible and scripting languages where they fit best.
  • Apply networking fundamentals including routing, segmentation, security groups, DNS, TLS and load balancing to design secure and operable environments.
  • Support the operational lifecycle of platform services including identity, messaging and application server tiers where present.
  • Where SRE skills are present, identify and reduce failure domains, apply SLOs and post-incident learning, enhance observability and troubleshoot low-latency Java-based applications.
  • Mentor engineers on DevOps practice, AWS engineering, automation and SRE principles through pairing, code review and worked examples.
  • Drive collaboration across squads to lift the standard of automation, observability and operational discipline.
  • Champion delivery excellence with secure, automated, observable and repeatable ways of working.

Success Guide

This is a senior role at iOCO, so your CV needs to show real depth in AWS, CI/CD and infrastructure as code, not just a list of tools. Highlight specific projects where you built pipelines, automated AWS provisioning or improved reliability in a regulated environment. If you have banking or PCI-DSS experience, put that front and centre. Certifications like AWS SysOps Administrator or Solutions Architect Associate will strengthen your application. Be ready to talk through how you have removed manual toil from delivery and how you have handled security and compliance in pipelines. Since it is a hybrid role in Sandton, make sure your location and availability are clear. Show your collaborative side too, as mentoring and cross-team work are part of the job.
