About the role
As a Senior Data Engineer at Capitec, you will be part of the Client Engagement Delivery team, responsible for building and maintaining the data foundation that drives client engagement and campaign activity. Your work will directly support targeted marketing efforts by ensuring reliable, accurate data flows into Salesforce Marketing Cloud and Data360.
You will design, build, and maintain robust data systems, analyse business requirements, and drive architectural decisions alongside the Data Architect. You will lead the development of complex applications, mentor less experienced engineers, and ensure data infrastructure reliability across various systems. The role involves working with batch and streaming data, implementing data governance frameworks, and optimising performance across heterogeneous environments.
Engineers in this team may be assigned to different workstreams, so you should be comfortable switching context and going deep into technical challenges. You will partner with Business Analysts, Product Owners, and Marketing Managers to translate business needs into deployable pipelines and support post campaign measurement.

- Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology (Honours in Computer Science or IT preferred)
- At least 8 to 10 years of experience in data engineering
- Expert level SQL with query optimisation, tuning, and indexing strategies
- Advanced to Expert level Python applied in production data engineering environments
- Deep knowledge of AWS data services and architecture
- Experience with Apache Spark, Hadoop, and similar big data tools
- Proven track record leading large scale data engineering projects
- Experience designing and implementing data lake, data warehouse, or other data patterns
- Knowledge of enterprise wide data governance frameworks with automated quality and monitoring
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes, and containerised data solutions using infrastructure as code
- Ability to mentor and develop less experienced engineers
- Strong communication and stakeholder influencing skills
- Clear criminal and credit record
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain robust, scalable, and efficient data systems
- Analyse business and system requirements to enhance data platforms at enterprise scale
- Drive architectural decisions and provide input to the Data Architect on solution design
