Overview

Standard Bank is looking for a seasoned credit professional to lead risk assessment for Natural Resources deals across Africa. If you have deep experience in mining, oil, gas, or related sectors and want to shape complex transactions while mentoring junior staff, this senior role in Johannesburg offers a meaningful career step.

About the role

As a Senior Credit Manager in the Natural Resources Origination team, you will provide independent credit risk leadership and transaction support for financing opportunities across South Africa and the wider African continent. You will work closely with Coverage, Product, and Transaction teams during origination, structuring, and execution, ensuring risks are identified early and properly mitigated.

Your day to day will involve shaping transactions before formal credit submission by offering clear risk insight and challenging proposed structures. You will act as a subject matter expert on sector trends, commodity markets, and emerging risks, and you will lead the presentation of transactions at Credit Committees and senior approval forums. You will also review term sheets, legal agreements, security arrangements, and transaction documents, collaborating with ESG Risk advisory to assess environmental and social risks.

Part of the role includes preparing or evaluating annual review credit applications and providing coaching to less experienced credit professionals. This is a chance to influence high value deals and contribute to a well managed Natural Resources credit portfolio.

Please apply directly on Standard Bank's official careers site to be considered.

Requirements

  • Postgraduate degree in Business Commerce, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
  • Professional qualification such as CA(SA), CFA, or FRM is preferred.
  • 8 to 10 years of experience in credit risk, with exposure to Natural Resources sectors like mining, oil and gas, or related industries.
  • Proven track record working on complex, structured transactions across South Africa and the broader African continent.
  • Experience in project finance, corporate lending, global market derivative products, leveraged finance, trade finance, or diversified industrials would be an advantage.
  • Strong knowledge of financial markets, commodity markets, macroeconomic trends, and regional geographies.
  • Thorough understanding of credit procedures, policies, delegated authority frameworks, credit rating methodologies, Basel requirements, and regulatory expectations.
  • Solid grasp of banking products and facilities that create counterparty credit risk.

Responsibilities

  • Provide independent credit risk leadership and transaction support for Natural Resources financing opportunities.
  • Work with Coverage, Product, and Transaction teams to identify and assess risks early during origination and structuring.
  • Challenge proposed structures and assumptions to ensure alignment with the bank's risk appetite.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders including clients, sponsors, advisers, and transaction teams.
  • Offer informed credit input on sector trends, emerging risks, commodity markets, and industry developments.
  • Review term sheets, legal agreements, security arrangements, and transaction documents to ensure risks are mitigated and properly documented.
  • Collaborate with Environmental, Governance, and Social Risk advisory to assess ESG risks.
  • Lead transaction presentations at Credit Committees and other senior approval forums.
  • Originate credit applications for new transactions and prepare or evaluate annual review credit applications.
  • Coach and provide technical guidance to less experienced credit professionals.

Success Guide

This is a senior position at one of Africa's biggest banks, so your application should show more than just years of experience. Highlight specific deals you have worked on in mining, oil, gas, or similar sectors, especially complex or cross border transactions. The hiring team will want to see how you have influenced credit decisions and managed risk. If you have a CA(SA), CFA, or FRM, make sure that stands out. Also emphasise any experience presenting to credit committees or mentoring junior staff, as leadership is key here. Standard Bank's official careers portal is the only way to apply. Take time to tailor your CV to the Natural Resources focus and show that you understand the African market context.
