Overview
An international tech company is looking for a senior C# backend developer to lead architectural decisions and mentor engineering teams. This 12 month contract based in Durban or Pretoria offers a strong monthly rate and the chance to work on complex distributed systems while championing AI assisted development practices.
About the role
This is a senior technical leadership role where you will shape how multiple software development teams build and maintain complex backend systems. You will work on high level architecture, guide engineering standards, and help teams solve difficult technical problems that span across services and platforms.
What you will focus on:
- Leading architectural reviews and defining technical standards across teams
- Providing deep C# and backend development expertise on complex solutions
- Championing AI assisted development tools and responsible AI governance
- Mentoring senior developers and driving engineering excellence
- Improving CI/CD pipelines and production support processes
You will work closely with engineering managers, product managers, and compliance teams to make sure technical decisions support long term business goals. The company operates in a regulated environment so security and compliance thinking will be part of your daily work.
Important note: This is a 12 month contract starting 01 December 2026, with Durban as the preferred location and Pretoria as second preference.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT, or a related field
- Approximately 6 or more years of progressive software development and system design experience
- Strong expertise in C# and backend software development
- Advanced experience with PostgreSQL and relational databases
- Extensive experience in software testing, automated testing, and quality assurance
- Strong understanding of software architecture, distributed systems, and complex multi service applications
- Experience with RESTful APIs, microservices, event driven architecture, and asynchronous communication
- Knowledge of CI/CD, DevOps practices, and modern deployment methodologies
- Experience with Git and version control
- Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership, mentoring, and conducting code or architectural reviews
- Strong understanding of application security and working in regulated environments
Responsibilities
- Architect and deliver highly complex software solutions and cross service applications
- Lead architectural reviews and technical assessments to ensure solutions are scalable, secure, and maintainable
- Define technical approaches and implementation guidelines across multiple engineering teams
- Evaluate distributed systems, cloud native architectures, microservices, and event driven solutions
- Identify and resolve cross team technical dependencies and architectural risks
- Provide advanced technical expertise in C# and oversee development of complex software components
- Guide teams in effective testing practices and promote clean, secure coding standards
- Champion AI assisted development tools and establish responsible AI governance frameworks
- Mentor senior developers and engineering professionals in advanced technical concepts
- Drive improvements in CI/CD architecture and support production incident resolution
- Collaborate with engineering managers, product managers, and compliance teams on technical decisions
