Overview

A great opportunity for a hands-on Project Manager in Johannesburg to run retail fit-out projects from start to finish. You will coordinate contractors, suppliers and trades, manage budgets and timelines, and travel to sites across South Africa. If you have a practical understanding of building projects and enjoy solving problems on the ground, this permanent role with medical aid and pension benefits could be a strong next step in your career.

About the role

Our client is looking for an experienced Project Manager to plan, coordinate and deliver retail, construction and home improvement projects. You will manage the full project lifecycle, making sure work stays on schedule, within budget and meets quality standards.

Your day to day will involve working closely with contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and other stakeholders. You will develop project schedules, monitor costs, oversee site activities, coordinate different trades and resolve any delays or challenges that come up. You will also handle procurement, project variations, contractor performance and regular progress updates to stakeholders.

Part of the role includes travelling domestically to project sites across South Africa, so a valid driver's licence and willingness to travel are important.

Requirements

  • Proven project management experience within retail, construction, fit-outs, installations or a related environment
  • Sound understanding of building related projects and the practical coordination of different trades
  • Experience managing contractors, suppliers, budgets, timelines and project deliverables
  • Strong planning, organisational and problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel domestically across South Africa

Advantageous: experience in home improvement, hardware, shelving, fixtures, fittings or retail installation, coordinating installation or site based projects, and a qualification in Project Management or Construction Management.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate and manage projects from initiation through to completion
  • Develop and monitor project schedules, budgets, resources and deadlines
  • Coordinate contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and other project stakeholders
  • Oversee project activities and monitor progress against agreed specifications and timelines
  • Coordinate different trades and ensure all parties work together effectively
  • Identify potential delays, risks and challenges and implement practical solutions
  • Monitor quality standards and ensure compliance with health and safety requirements
  • Manage project costs, procurement, variations and contractor performance
  • Maintain communication with stakeholders and provide regular progress updates
  • Coordinate project completion, handovers and resolution of outstanding issues
  • Travel domestically to project sites as required

Benefits

Medical aid, pension fund, 50% contribution

Success Guide

This role is perfect if you enjoy being on site and solving real problems as they happen. Retail fit-outs move fast, so highlight any experience you have coordinating trades, managing budgets or working with suppliers and contractors.

In your CV, mention specific projects you have delivered and the challenges you overcame. If you have worked in home improvement, shelving, fixtures or installations, make sure that stands out. A valid driver's licence is essential since you will travel to sites across South Africa.

During the interview, be ready to talk about how you keep projects on track when things change. Show that you are organised, hands-on and comfortable communicating with different people on site.
