About the role
This full time role sits inside a law firm in Monument Park, Pretoria, and exists to make sure the practice operates within the legal, ethical and regulatory rules that govern South African attorneys. You will be the person who monitors compliance programmes, flags reputational and legal risk, and keeps partners and management informed.
What the day to day looks like:
- You will keep the firm aligned with the Legal Practice Act, the Rules of the Legal Practice Council and FICA, and prepare reports or declarations for regulators when needed.
- Client onboarding, KYC and anti money laundering checks fall under your watch, so you will review processes and make sure they hold up.
- You will draft, roll out and refresh internal compliance policies and codes of conduct, and run risk assessments to test whether controls actually work.
- As Information Officer under POPIA, you will handle data privacy compliance, manage breaches and drive staff awareness around protecting client information.
- You will run compliance and ethics training for legal and support staff, and keep a compliance risk register that goes to senior management.
- Internal audits, follow ups on non compliance and liaison with external auditors and professional bodies round out the role.

Requirements
- LLB Degree
- Admission as an Attorney of the High Court
- Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience in compliance, risk management or regulatory affairs, preferably within a law firm or financial services environment
- Certification in Compliance Management or AML/CFT is advantageous
- Working knowledge of the Legal Practice Act, LPC Rules, FICA and POPIA
- Ability to prepare compliance reports and engage with regulators and professional bodies
- Strong attention to detail and the confidence to flag non compliance to senior management
Responsibilities
- Monitor and ensure the firm complies with the Legal Practice Act, Rules of the Legal Practice Council and FICA requirements
- Oversee client onboarding, KYC and AML processes
- Prepare and submit reports or declarations to regulatory bodies as required
- Develop, implement and review internal compliance policies, codes of conduct and procedures
- Conduct regular risk assessments and confirm that internal controls are effective
- Act as Information Officer under POPIA and oversee data privacy compliance, breach management and staff awareness training
- Ensure client data and document management practices meet POPIA and firm standards
- Conduct compliance and ethics training for legal and support staff
- Identify, assess and mitigate regulatory and reputational risks, and maintain a compliance risk register
- Conduct internal audits and follow up on non compliance issues
- Prepare periodic compliance reports for partners and the management committee
- Liaise with external auditors, regulators and professional bodies
