A cybersecurity firm in Johannesburg is looking for a hands-on Junior Full Stack Developer to work on a Flask and FastAPI web application. You will join a small team, work closely with the CTO, and help keep production systems secure and reliable. About the role
This role is with a specialist cybersecurity organisation that builds tools and services for government and commercial clients. You will take ownership of an existing web app, improve it, and add new features.
Day to day you will:
- Work on a Flask based front end and a Python FastAPI backend
- Fix bugs, improve security, and make the app more reliable
- Build REST APIs and connect them to other systems
- Write automated tests and document your work
- Collaborate with the CTO and security experts
This is a junior full stack position in Johannesburg, onsite. If you enjoy learning from an existing codebase and making practical improvements, this could be a good fit.
Requirements
- Experience developing and supporting production Python web applications
- Working knowledge of Flask and FastAPI
- Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript and server rendered templates
- Experience designing, integrating and troubleshooting REST APIs
- Experience working with databases and writing efficient data access code
- Understanding of secure web development: authentication, authorisation, session management, input validation and common vulnerabilities
- Experience using Git and structured code review practices
- Practical experience with Linux, Docker and application deployment
- Ability to understand unfamiliar codebases and implement changes without breaking existing functionality
- Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills
- A relevant qualification in Software Development, Computer Science or a related field is advantageous, but equivalent practical experience will also be considered
Responsibilities
- Take ownership of the existing application codebase and identify improvements
- Develop and maintain Python applications using Flask and FastAPI
- Maintain and improve web interfaces with HTML, CSS and JavaScript
- Design, develop and maintain REST APIs and integrations
- Implement and maintain authentication, role based access controls and data separation
- Investigate and resolve defects, performance issues and production incidents
- Improve code structure and address technical debt incrementally
- Develop and maintain automated tests
- Manage application dependencies config and secure handling of credentials
- Support deployments, logging, monitoring and operational troubleshooting
- Maintain technical documentation
- Collaborate with the CTO and cybersecurity specialists
- Apply secure development practices
- Review, test and maintain code, including AI assisted code
