A senior technology leadership role with a growing consulting firm focused on Salesforce, enterprise architecture, and digital transformation. You'll shape technical direction, mentor architects and developers, and guide complex client solutions. Based in Johannesburg or Cape Town, with a possible path to CTO for an exceptional candidate. This is a strategic, commercially minded position for someone who blends deep Salesforce expertise with strong engineering leadership.
About the role
Our client is a growing technology consulting business specialising in Salesforce, enterprise architecture, systems integration and digital transformation. They are looking for a Head of Architecture & Engineering to provide technical direction, strengthen engineering standards, oversee complex client solutions and help drive business growth through technology excellence.
This is a senior leadership position, not a traditional IT infrastructure or operational management role. You will act as a senior technical authority across complex enterprise Salesforce implementations, lead solution architecture and advise clients on technical roadmaps. You will also establish and maintain architecture principles, engineering standards and technical governance processes, while mentoring architects, technical leads, developers and consultants.
The role combines approximately 40% billable client architecture and advisory work with 60% technical leadership, governance, presales, capability development and strategic initiatives. An exceptional candidate may be considered for appointment as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) with executive committee participation.
Requirements
- Substantial experience designing and delivering complex enterprise Salesforce solutions.
- Proven senior architecture or engineering leadership experience within a technology consulting or implementation environment.
- Strong technical understanding of Salesforce configuration, custom development, integrations, APIs, data and security.
- Broad knowledge of enterprise architecture and modern software engineering practices.
- Experience overseeing technical delivery across multiple concurrent client engagements.
- Strong understanding of development standards, testing, DevOps and deployment processes.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and influence experienced technical professionals.
- Excellent technical discovery, solution estimation, presales and client presentation skills.
- Strong commercial awareness, including project scope, delivery costs, margins and risk.
- The technical credibility to challenge architectural decisions and guide complex problem solving.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management and leadership skills.
- Highly advantageous: Salesforce Financial Services Cloud, Experience Cloud, Sales Cloud and Service Cloud; MuleSoft, API architecture and enterprise integration platforms; experience in banking, insurance or wealth management; modern web, mobile application and portal architecture; relevant Salesforce certifications; AI-assisted software engineering, automation and engineering productivity improvements.
Responsibilities
- Act as a senior technical authority across complex enterprise Salesforce implementations.
- Lead solution architecture involving platform configuration, custom development, integrations, data, identity and security.
- Advise clients on architecture decisions, technical roadmaps and sustainable technology solutions.
- Provide technical guidance on complex development challenges and escalations.
- Establish and maintain architecture principles, engineering standards and technical governance processes.
- Oversee design reviews, code quality, testing, DevOps practices and release management.
- Ensure solutions are secure, scalable, maintainable and commercially viable.
- Identify technical risks and improve delivery consistency across multiple projects.
- Mentor and guide architects, technical leads, developers and consultants.
- Strengthen technical capability, knowledge sharing and professional development.
- Support technical recruitment, skills development and succession planning.
- Lead technical discovery sessions, solution design and client advisory engagements.
- Support presales activities, proposals, RFPs, estimations and client presentations.
- Work with commercial and delivery teams to manage project scope, delivery risks and profitability.
- Contribute to technology strategy aligned with business objectives.
- Promote reusable solutions, engineering best practices and delivery improvements.
- Evaluate AI-assisted engineering tools and emerging technologies to improve productivity and quality.
