Group Demand Planner for Raw Materials in Manufacturing
HR Innovation · Crown Mines, Johannesburg, Gauteng
Overview
A leading manufacturing group with three plants is looking for an experienced Group Demand Planner to manage raw materials planning across all sites. You will run MRP in SYSPRO, balance supply with production needs, handle critical and imported materials, and work closely with procurement, production and finance. This senior role offers a competitive package of R1 million to R1.3 million per year and is based in Crown Mines, Johannesburg.
About the role
Our client, a well established manufacturing leader with three backward integrated plants, needs a Group Demand Planner to take ownership of raw materials demand and supply planning across the group. You will translate sales forecasts and S&OP plans into a rolling 12 to 18 month materials plan, run and review MRP in SYSPRO, and ensure critical and imported materials are available when production needs them.
The role goes beyond number crunching. You will design and improve MRP processes, govern master data, manage supply risks for critical materials, plan imports end to end, optimise inventory, and lead the raw materials input into the monthly S&OP process. You will also mentor planners and buyers and drive continuous improvement across all three plants.
This is a permanent, full time position based in Crown Mines, Johannesburg, reporting into a group function. The package is R1 000 000 to R1 300 000 cost to company per annum.
Requirements
- Degree or National Diploma in Supply Chain Management, Logistics Management, Industrial Engineering or Purchasing and Supply Management. A postgraduate qualification is preferred.
- APICS CPIM or CSCP, or SAPICS certification, will be advantageous.
- Minimum 8 to 10 years experience in demand planning, materials planning or supply planning within a manufacturing environment.
- At least 5 years developing, implementing and maintaining MRP processes and systems.
- Proven hands on SYSPRO experience in MRP, inventory management, purchasing, bills of materials and work in progress. This is essential.
- Demonstrated experience managing raw materials planning across multiple manufacturing sites or plants.
- Experience planning and managing critical raw materials, including extended lead time or single source items.
- Experience managing imported raw materials with a sound understanding of freight, clearing and customs processes.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills including pivot tables, lookups, data analysis and modelling. Power BI or similar tools will be advantageous.
- Exposure to vertically or backward integrated manufacturing and to process, heavy or industrial manufacturing environments will be highly advantageous.
Responsibilities
- Consolidate sales forecasts, production schedules and the S&OP consensus plan into a rolling raw materials demand plan covering 12 to 18 months.
- Run, review and release MRP for all three manufacturing plants, critically evaluating system outputs.
- Manage interdependencies across the backward integrated value chain so shortages and surpluses are not shifted between plants.
- Design, implement and continuously improve MRP processes and planning logic within SYSPRO.
- Govern planning master data including bills of materials, lead times, safety stock, reorder points and supplier item links.
- Identify, classify and monitor critical raw materials and maintain risk based safety stock and contingency plans.
- Plan imported raw materials end to end, from purchase order and shipping through customs clearance to receipt at the plants.
- Monitor and optimise raw materials inventory across all sites, including slow moving, excess and obsolete stock.
- Lead the raw materials input into the monthly S&OP process with data backed supply risks and opportunities.
- Develop planning dashboards and KPI reports covering forecast accuracy, material availability, stock cover, import performance and supplier delivery.
- Mentor and support planners and buyers to build consistent planning capability across the group.

Success Guide
This is a senior group role, so your application needs to show more than just that you worked in planning. Highlight specific examples where you improved MRP accuracy, reduced stockouts on critical materials, or managed imports through customs without delaying production. Mention your SYSPRO experience early and be ready to talk about how you validate MRP outputs rather than just accepting them. If you have worked across multiple plants or in a backward integrated environment, make that clear. In the interview, expect questions on how you balance working capital against supply continuity and how you handle supplier disruptions. A practical example of a crisis you managed will count for a lot.
