Overview
Pro Tem Capability is looking for a hands on Supervisor to oversee the furnace and production floor in Gqeberha. About the role
Our client uses high grade ferrous scrap to manufacture steel billets, and they need a Supervisor who can keep the furnace and production floor running safely and on schedule.
In this role you will lead the shift team on the production floor, making sure work continues without delays from one shift to the next. You will be responsible for enforcing PPE rules, conducting toolbox talks and risk assessments, and making sure every team member follows health and safety procedures. Part of your day will involve checking production activities from the previous shift, reviewing completed checklists, inspecting equipment like gas cutters and fire extinguishers, and escalating any issues to the Manager quickly. You will also manage absenteeism, support employee counselling sessions, oversee housekeeping and maintenance tasks, and make sure shift handovers happen properly.
Please note: This position is based in Gqeberha and may require shift work, standby and overtime.
Requirements
- Minimum qualification of Matric or equivalent
- A relevant Supervisor Certificate will be advantageous
- A valid Excavator and Forklift licence will be advantageous
- Ability to work accurately and independently
- A good attendance, disciplinary and timekeeping record
- Must be available for shift work, standby and overtime
Responsibilities
- Ensure the correct PPE is always used and address any PPE concerns promptly
- Monitor daily absenteeism, arrange cover and report issues to the Manager
- Check production activities from the previous shift and keep current shift production on track
- Conduct daily team and toolbox talk meetings
- Gather completed checklists from subordinates, review them and update relevant reports
- Inspect equipment used by subordinates and raise concerns with the Manager
- Check hot work permits for gas cutters and fire extinguisher expiry dates
- Ensure all subordinates follow the Daily Safe Task Instruction (DSTI)
- Investigate incidents and complete incident investigation forms by the end of each shift
- Complete shift handover with the next Supervisor and maintain handover practices
- Participate in health and safety risk assessments and employee counselling sessions
- Monitor general vehicle and machinery inspections
- Assist the Manager in identifying and closing on the job training gaps
