About the role
As a Deli Service Area Assistant at Pick n Pay on Nicol, you will be the friendly face behind the deli counter, helping customers and keeping the department running smoothly during your shift.
What you will be doing
- Serving customers with a friendly, professional and helpful attitude
- Preparing and packaging deli products such as sliced meats, cheeses and ready to eat items
- Keeping displays stocked, rotated and looking fresh and appealing
- Checking product freshness and removing anything that does not meet standards
- Maintaining high levels of hygiene, food safety and cleanliness in the service area
- Weighing, portioning and pricing products accurately
- Assisting with stocktaking, receiving deliveries and reporting shortages or wastage
- Keeping refrigeration units and display counters clean and reporting faults
- Following all company policies on food handling, health and safety
- Helping with promotional activities and product sampling when needed

Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric) is a minimum requirement
- Previous experience in a deli, food service, catering or supermarket environment will be an advantage
- Basic knowledge of food hygiene and safe food handling practices
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers and colleagues
- Good customer service and interpersonal skills
- Good numerical skills for weighing, portioning and pricing products
- Ability to work in a fast paced retail environment
- Ability to follow instructions and comply with food safety procedures
- Physically able to stand for extended periods and handle stock and equipment safely
- Willingness to work shifts, weekends and public holidays
- Must reside in Alexandra or Sandton
Responsibilities
- Assist customers with deli products and provide friendly, professional and timely service
- Prepare and package food items where required
- Maintain product displays and monitor product freshness
- Ensure the service area meets hygiene, food safety, cleanliness and presentation standards
- Support stocktaking and inventory control activities
- Assist with receiving and checking deli deliveries
- Monitor stock levels and report shortages, damages and wastage
- Ensure refrigeration units and display counters are clean and operating correctly, reporting faults promptly
- Assist with promotional activities, product sampling and seasonal displays where authorised
- Maintain accurate product labels, pricing information and date markings
- Follow procedures for safe storage, handling and disposal of food
- Support cleaning schedules and complete hygiene checklists
- Wear the prescribed uniform and maintain required personal hygiene standards
- Follow company procedures for cash handling or point of sale transactions where applicable
- Assist other departments when reasonably required by management
- Attend departmental meetings and complete relevant training
- Report customer complaints, food safety concerns, equipment faults and operational risks to the supervisor
- Perform other reasonable duties assigned by the supervisor or management
