About the role
As a Blockman at Pick n Pay Boksburg, you will be at the heart of the butchery, preparing and presenting quality meat products for customers. Your day to day work will involve breaking down carcasses, de boning various cuts, and producing mince, sausage, and boerewors according to set standards.
You will also operate butchery equipment like the band saw, monitor cold chain temperatures, and keep the work area clean and hygienic. Customer service is important, so you will assist shoppers in a friendly and professional way, and help with receiving stock from suppliers.

Requirements
- Matric (Grade 12) certificate
- Must reside close to the Boksburg store
- Must comply with the medical criteria required by the OHS Act for butchery work
- Successful completion of numeracy screening assessments
- Customer minded and a team player
- Good communication skills, able to listen and respond appropriately
- Passion for the product and a sense of urgency
- Ability to complete tasks accurately
- Willingness to grow and develop self
- Able to cut, manufacture, and produce various meat products such as loin chops, roasts, etc. (skill will be tested)
- Comfortable working in a cold environment
- Physically able to lift carcasses and containers of meat
Responsibilities
- Operate all butchery equipment including the band saw
- Report any defective equipment or utensils to the Butchery Manager
- Control, merchandise, and promote stock according to laid down procedures and standards
- Prepare and break various meat carcasses according to specifications
- De bone all cuts of meat and manufacture mince, produce sausage and boerewors
- Prevent wastage, shrinkage, and damages
- Check temperatures and monitor and maintain the cold chain
- Provide required products or services and handle customers courteously and in a businesslike manner
- Maintain high levels of cleanliness and hygiene for butchery equipment and utensils
- Assist with receiving meat from suppliers
- Assist with training staff on various new products and lines
