Imqs is looking for a proactive Asset Accountant to help local governments get their asset registers GRAP and mSCOA compliant. If you have a BCom Accounting degree and at least 5 years in asset accounting, this hybrid role offers meaningful public sector impact, audit support work, and client facing projects. You will need your own vehicle and be open to travel and occasional overtime when deadlines demand it.
About the role
Imqs is hiring an Asset Accountant to work with public sector clients, mainly local governments, making sure their municipal asset registers meet GRAP and mSCOA standards. This is a hybrid, permanent role that mixes technical accounting work with client interaction and audit support.
What the day to day looks like:
- You will determine asset valuations using set unit rates and GRAP first time implementation rules.
- You will work with engineers on cost accounting and unit rates for asset components.
- You will update asset registers with annual financial movements such as additions, depreciation, de recognitions and impairments.
- You will help clients with adjustment journals and reconcile asset registers against general ledgers and financial statements.
- You will support client audit processes and reconcile physical verification results with previous asset registers.
- You will run asset register data integrity checks and make sure the asset management information system aligns with the financial asset register.
- You will prepare asset related disclosure notes for Annual Financial Statements and assist with budgeting for capital renewals and maintenance.
Good to know: This role is hybrid, permanent and full time. You will need a valid driver's license and access to a vehicle. Reasonable overtime may be required when deadlines dictate, and you should be willing to travel when needed.

Responsibilities
- Determine asset valuations based on unit rates and GRAP requirements for first time implementation of compliant asset registers
- Assist engineers with cost accounting in determining unit rates for asset components
- Update asset registers with annual financial movements including additions, depreciation, de recognitions and impairments
- Perform calculations on prior year error adjustments and changes in accounting policies
- Assist clients with preparing adjustment journals
- Reconcile asset registers with general ledger and financial statements
- Assist with clients audit processes
- Reconcile physical verification results with previous asset registers and apportion fair values over unbundled components
- Perform financial calculations for asset management plans and strategies including budgeting for capital renewals and maintenance
- Assist in identifying and developing funding models for asset strategies and plans
- Perform asset register data integrity checks and validation procedures
- Ensure alignment between the asset management information system and the financial asset register
- Investigate discrepancies between physical verification results and asset registers
- Prepare and review asset related disclosure notes for Annual Financial Statements
