This is a full time role for someone with three to five years of cybersecurity experience who wants to make a real impact in the banking sector.

About the role

As an Application Security Engineer at the South African Reserve Bank, you will be part of the Business Solutions and Technology Department. Your main job is to make sure the bank's software and applications are secure by finding weaknesses before cybercriminals do.

  • Creating test plans and running security tests on applications at different stages of development.
  • Using approved tools to test for vulnerabilities like secure coding errors and configuration mistakes.
  • Analysing test results, writing reports, and helping teams fix the issues found.
  • Checking vulnerability assessment reports to confirm applications are deployed securely.
  • Taking part in security audits and helping address any findings to reduce the bank's risk.
  • Keeping up to date with the latest cybersecurity trends and technologies.

Application notes: You must apply through the SARB's official application system. The bank gives preference to candidates from designated groups and encourages people with disabilities to apply.

Requirements

  • A National Diploma (NQF 6) in Information Technology or an equivalent qualification in a related field.
  • Three to five years of relevant experience in a cybersecurity operations environment.
  • Experience designing and implementing manual and automated security software tests and maintaining security technologies.
  • Intermediate cybersecurity certifications such as CompTIA CySA+, Certified Application Security Engineer (CASE), or technology specific certifications will be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of industry and business awareness, quality assurance, and continuous improvement practices.
  • Understanding of DevSecOps practices and tools for integrating security into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Skills in designing, developing, and implementing security software tests.
  • Experience with automated testing tools, systems and networking, and application and software testing processes.
  • Knowledge of the secure software development life cycle (SSDLC).

Responsibilities

  • Consult with stakeholders to understand expected application outputs and identify appropriate security controls.
  • Incorporate security controls into technical specifications and documentation for secure deployment.
  • Develop test plans and design security software tests to secure applications and software.
  • Perform security testing according to approved test plans using SARB approved tools.
  • Collate, document, analyse, and report security testing results to identify vulnerabilities and configuration errors.
  • Use vulnerability assessment reports to validate secure deployment of applications and software.
  • Participate in application security audits and respond to audit findings.
  • Keep abreast of cybersecurity technologies, developments, and practices.
