Overview
A hands-on technical leadership role for a senior engineer who wants to own the engineering side of AI, automation, and digitization in a financial services environment. You will set standards, build proof of concepts, review code, and guide development teams across RPA, Power Platform, Azure, and custom development. Based in Sandton on a fixed term contract, this role suits someone who enjoys both building and leading.
About the role
As the AI Engineering Lead, you will be the go to engineering authority for the Digitization and Automation function. This is a hands on role where you will translate solution designs into practical engineering approaches, produce technical and infrastructure designs, and make sure that everything built is secure, scalable, and ready for production.
You will work across RPA (Blue Prism), Power Platform, .NET or Java development, API and integration work, Azure cloud services, and AI and intelligent automation solutions. Part of your week will be spent building proof of concepts, solution skeletons, and reusable frameworks, while another part involves reviewing code, guiding developers, and supporting governance and production readiness forums.
You will also help raise engineering maturity by mentoring developers and automation specialists, driving adoption of DevOps and DevSecOps practices, and promoting reusable engineering patterns across all streams.

Requirements
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field
- 8 or more years of experience in software engineering, automation, systems development, or solution delivery
- Experience across both traditional software development and low code or automation technologies
- Demonstrated experience in .NET and/or Java development
- Experience producing technical design and infrastructure artefacts
- Experience conducting code reviews and providing technical leadership
- Practical knowledge of RPA (Blue Prism or equivalent) and Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Copilot Studio)
- Experience with API and integration development, Azure cloud services, AI and intelligent automation solutions, DevOps and CI/CD practices, and application security
- Preferred: financial services experience, Microsoft or Azure certifications, Power Platform or Blue Prism certifications, architecture certifications, and experience supporting governance and production readiness processes
Responsibilities
- Define and maintain engineering standards, frameworks, patterns, and best practices for the Digitization and Automation function
- Translate solution designs into implementable engineering approaches, including technical designs, infrastructure designs, deployment models, and integration architectures
- Ensure solutions align with enterprise architecture, security, infrastructure, and operational standards
- Identify technical risks, dependencies, and implementation challenges early and validate engineering readiness before governance and production deployment
- Support architecture, security, infrastructure, and production readiness forums with complete and accurate engineering artefacts
- Develop proof of concepts, technical spikes, reference implementations, reusable frameworks, components, and solution skeletons
- Conduct detailed code reviews across relevant technology stacks and guide developers on coding standards, design patterns, testing, security, and engineering best practices
- Mentor developers, automation specialists, and engineers and drive adoption of DevOps, DevSecOps, and modern engineering practices
- Act as the technical escalation point for complex engineering challenges and serve as the principal engineer for the Digitization and Automation function
