Overtime in South Africa: What Young Workers Should Know

Imagine your shift ends at 5pm, but your manager asks you to stay until 8pm because the business is busy. Those extra hours may be called overtime.
Overtime is work done beyond your normal working hours. In South Africa, overtime is regulated by the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA).
Does your employer have to pay overtime?
Overtime is normally worked by agreement between the employer and employee. The law also places limits on how much overtime an employee can work.
For many employees, overtime is generally limited to 3 hours per day and 10 hours per week, although agreements and specific employment rules can affect how these limits apply.
How much should overtime pay be?
For employees covered by the ordinary BCEA overtime rules, overtime is generally paid at one and a half times the employee's normal hourly wage.
For example, if your normal hourly rate is R40:
- Normal hourly rate = R40
- Overtime rate at 1.5 times = R60 per hour
- 2 hours of overtime = R120
Your actual situation may be different if your employment contract, collective agreement or sector-specific rules provide different arrangements.
Can overtime be exchanged for time off?
In some situations, an employer and employee can agree to use paid time off instead of simply paying overtime money. The agreement must follow the applicable legal requirements.
What if your boss keeps asking you to work extra hours?
Do not be afraid to ask questions. You can politely ask:
- “Is this overtime?”
- “How will these extra hours be paid?”
- “Will the overtime appear on my payslip?”
- “Is there an agreement about overtime in my contract?”
Keep your own record of the extra hours you work. This can be useful when checking your payslip.
Be careful with unpaid overtime.
If you regularly work extra hours but never receive the agreed payment or time off, you should ask your employer for an explanation and seek advice if the problem is not resolved.
Job seeker tip: Never assume that “staying late” is just part of the job. Ask what your normal hours are and what happens when you work beyond those hours.
